Making this steep hillside into a garden is truly a labour of love. Months of digging by hand, carrying bucket by bucket of concrete, amending the clay soil one trug at a time… to now have drip watering in, mulch and plants. All sorts of wildlife—especially birds and insects—have come in abundance to share our approval of such a rewarding project. Paths and steps still to concrete, pergola structures and gates to finish… but no rush. Not when these spectacular plants are putting on their best this season for us to enjoy.

An uphill slog most definitely! But early morning strolls amidst dewy petals, fog drifts and gilded sun-shiny foliage make the worst of it all feel so far into the past. Especially when there’s a lovely place to sit, enjoy a cup of tea, listen to the birds and insects and see all this beautiful new life that wasn’t here before. Pouring concrete stairs and pathways on our steep hillside garden has transformed its accessibility and feeling of permanence. While we do it ourselves and in small batches, and many pours await, each feels like an enormous improvement. The views from these new paths make for lovely discoveries, like here, the evening fog creeping directly over and sinking down onto the hillside. A steep hillside home often means one with a view or two. This view is where we meet the sun every morning. Unless there is fog. But we don’t mind. Salvia gregii “Tangerine”. Mounding, sprawling habit. As stems fall and break ever so easily, they propagate the plant. We broke a few stems planting, thus the cage supports, but take a cutting from the broken stem and you’ll have another plant! #thissteephillside #britishgarden #britishgardens #californiagarden #californiagardening #gardeninspiration #gardeninspo #gardeningtips #salviaspecialist #plantcuttings #plantcutting
A steep hillside garden has lots of terraces, tie-backs, stairs and paths! And beautiful plants where none were able to exist before. Our morning wander in the garden with a cuppa is the best start to a spring day. #thissteephillside #britishgarden #britishgardens #californiagarden #californiagardening #gardeninspiration #gardeninspo #gardeningtips #vegetablegardening
Iris leaf spot: ugly brown speckles caused by the Mycosphaerella (Dudymellina) macrospora. The fungal spores enter the plant through damaged leaves, leaving dead leaf tissue. Remove leaves and infected parts. Spray with a suitable fungicide containing triticonazole, myclobutanil and develop an ongoing treatment schedule for the season, which may mean re-spraying 7-10 days later. Check fungicide labels for specific recommendations. #thissteephillside #californiagarden #gardeningtips #irises #irisesofinstagram

Pollinators come in all shapes and sizes, from birds to insects. These stunning plants will have no trouble attracting you’re pollinators. They’re easy to grow and most are deliciously fragrant! Heliotrope, echium (Pride of Madeira/Echium Fastuosum Candicans in the video), salvia, nasturtium, verbena, penstemon and lavender. Plot or pot, if you have the space for big… or only sprig, there’s something in this list for any outdoor or window ledge sun trap.#thissteephillside #californiagardening #gardeninspiration #pollinatorgarden #pollinatorplants
Make your cat happy this spring with catnip. Make sure it’s a controlled substance lest it become a nub! Chicken wire controls overdosing to some extent. And don’t fool yourself in thinking it doesn’t need at top—we’ve seen kitties try to roll face and shoulders inside the wire enclosure with back legs and tail hanging out of the top. A dome of dosage definitely required. #thissteephillside #californiagardening #gardeninspiration #gardeningtips #catnipaddict #catniphigh
Hostas look amazing when slugs and snails haven’t got to them. Copper coil works, but a cheaper and just as effective method is to use copper tape and adhere it to the top portion of a planter pot. Be sure to get it into the ground at least an inch before your hosta leaves really starts sprouting, to avoid breakages and difficulty slipping it over the plant. Efflorescence is the mineral deposits that build up on your terra-cotta pots and appear as a white powder around the outside. If your pot experiences a lengthy period of being damp without thoroughly drying out, these minerals eventually begin to leach out from the clay material. An easy enough solution to get rid of it:1 part vinegar to 20 parts water. Leave the pot to soak in the solution for about 20 to 30 minutes. Scrub inside and outside and let it dry before use again. #thissteephillside #britishgarden #britishgardens #californiagarden #californiagardening #gardeninspiration #gardeninspo #gardeningtips #vegetablegardening #gardenpottery #gardenpotsandflowers #gardenpotsandplanters
I love this little watering can I brought back from the Corn Mill in the UK. But good grief it splashes! I’m on the hunt for one that allows me to water quickly without over-slosh. It seemed like a good idea two years ago to have all these planted and growing strong as a natural, hillside deer deterrent, with all their spikes. But now, not so much. Mature, these plants get large and dangerous, especially when weed-whacking season requires careful steep hillside navigation. Too tricky for us! We shall tackle deer jaunting up the hillside and causing little earth cascades some other way. So, to the “free table” down by the curb! #thissteephillside #britishgarden #britishgardens #californiagarden #californiagardening #gardeninspiration #gardeninspo #gardeningtips #vegetablegardening #freetable #freeplants #freeplant #freeplantsarethebestplants
